Tandem Trader includes several scanners to help you find potential trading opportunies like breakouts, breakdowns, momentum plays, and reversals. These include:
- Pre Market Scanner
- Intraday (Intra) Scanner
- After Hours (AH) Scanner
- Trend Scanner
In this guide, we'll explain what each of these scanners does and how to use them effectively.

What Are the Differences Between These Scanners?
Tandem Trader's scanners are designed to work similarly so that you can easily switch between them without navigating multiple different interfaces.
The main difference between the Pre Market, Intra, and AH Scanners is the timeframe in which they operate.
- Pre Market Scanner: Active during the pre-market session (4:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. ET)
- Intra Scanner: Active during regular market hours (9:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. ET)
- AH Scanner: Active during the post-market session (4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. ET)
The Trend Scanner is active during regular market hours, similar to the Intra Scanner. However, it uses data about a stock's price relative to its prior close and current VWAP to identify strongly trending stocks.
- Bullish Trending: Stocks with price above both prior close and VWAP.
- Bearish Trending: Stocks with price below both prior close and VWAP.
Accessing Tandem Trader Scanners
All four Tandem Trader scanners are available through the Scanner dashboard, in Grid and Floating Layouts, and as standalone windows.
To open a scanner using the Scanner dashboard: Navigate to the Scanner dashboard (Tools > Scanners in the sidebar navigation). Use the drop-down menu at the top of the dashboard to select which scanner you want.

To add a scanner to a Grid Layout: Navigate to the Grid Layouts dashboard and create a new layout. Click Add Grid Item, select the scanners you want to add, and click Update.
To add a scanner to a Floating Layout: Navigate to the Floating Layouts dashboard and click Create New Layout. Give your layout a name, select the scanners you want, and click Create Layout.
To open a scanner as a standalone window: Navigate to the Tools dashboard (Tools > All Tools in the sidebar navigation), then select which scanner you want to open.
Scanner Layout & Data Columns
All four scanners use a common layout and they share many of the same data columns. Shared data columns include:
| Column | Description |
|---|---|
| Ticker | Stock ticker symbol |
| Price | Current price |
| Change$ | Dollar change from previous market close (Pre Market & AH Scanners). Intra Scanner can measure from previous close or market open. |
| Change% | Percent change from previous market close (Pre Market & AH Scanners). Intra Scanner can measure from previous close or market open. |
| Range% | Percent range between session high and low. Hover to see session high/low prices. |
| Volume | Accumulated since start of pre-market trading |
| Float | Number of floating shares |
| Trades | Number of trades since start of pre-market trading |
| Rvol | Relative volume based on average 30-day volume at the current time |
| Retrace% | Percent difference between current price and session high. Displays "HOD" when ticker is at its pre-market, intraday, or after hours high. |
| Tags | Relevant Tandem Trader tags (e.g., ER<1 = earnings report less than 1 day ago, N = news today) |
The Intra Scanner and Trend Scanner have two additional data columns:
| Column | Description |
|---|---|
| PCL | Indicates whether the current price is above or below the previous close price |
| VWAP | Indicates whether the current price is above or below the volume-weighted average price (VWAP) |
You can click any column to sort the scanner results according to that value. You can also click and drag columns to rearrange them.

Trend Scanner
The Trend Scanner offers the option to scan for either bullish trending stocks or bearish trending stocks. It does not show both at the same time, although you can open two Trend Scanner windows.
To switch between bullish and bearish trend scans, use the drop-down menu at the top of the scanner.

Scanner Filters
All scanners support custom filters so you can focus on certain types of stocks or on movements that are actionable for your trading strategy.
There are 3 ways to apply filters.
Quick Filter
Quick Filters apply only to the current scanner window and cannot be saved. They offer limited parameters with preset values to speed up the filtering process.
To create a Quick Filter, click the filter icon in the upper right-hand corner of the scanner window. Select your filter settings using the drop-down menus.

Tip: By default, the Intraday and Trend Scanner automatically filter results by the number of trades in the last 1 minute. You can adjust this filter to suit your needs, but it's recommended to always enable the Trades filter. Having too many tickers in your scan results can slow down your browser.
Saved Filter
Saved Filters offer more parameters, full customization over data ranges to include in scanner results, and they can be easily re-applied to the same scanner in the future.
To create a Saved Filter, click the menu button in the upper right-hand corner of the scanner and select Manage Filters, then Add Filter. Give your Saved Filter a name, then select your filter settings. You have the option to check the box at the bottom to share your filter with the rest of the Tandem Traders community.

You can apply Saved Filters in the future by selecting them from the drop-down menu at the top of the Pre Market Scanner.
Note: Saved Filters are scanner-specific. That is, you can create different Saved Filters for each scanner. You cannot apply a Saved Filter created in the Pre Market Scanner to the Intra or AH Scanners.
Shared Filters
You can save and edit any Shared Filters created for that scanner by other Tandem Trader users. To access Shared Filters, click the menu button in the upper right-hand corner of the scanner and select Manage Filters, then Shared Filters.
Click the + button to create a personal copy of a Shared Filter and add it your list of Saved Filters. Return to the Manage Filters pop-up and click the pencil icon to edit the filter.

You can apply Shared Filters you've saved by selecting them from the drop-down menu at the top of the scanner.
Adjusting Scanner Settings
To change the default settings for any scanner, click the menu button in the upper right-hand corner and select Settings.
In the settings menu, you can:
- Modify which data column is used as the default to sort scanner results
- Apply a filter you've created as the scanner default
- Adjust whether Change$ and Change% are calculated from the previous market close or market open for the Intra Scanner
- Hide any data columns from the scanner
- Zoom in or out to adjust the scanner's size in Grid and Floating Layouts

Analyzing Scanner Results
Clicking on any row in scanner results will open an information panel with several tabs to help you analyze a stock. Tabs include:
- Key Stats
- News
- Tweets
- Shares
- Filings
- Warrants & Dilutions
- Options
- Levels
- Profile
You can also set price alerts directly from this panel, making it easy to monitor potential trading opportunities you identify using the scanners.

In Grid and Floating Layouts, clicking on a stock in the scanner will activate that ticker in linked modules within the same layout. For example, if you have the Intra Scanner and Charts open in the same Layout, clicking on a stock in the scanner will bring up that ticker's chart.
